Well hurricane mania is in full force here in Miami. People are buying anything and everything that they can get there hands on and every 5 minutes there's a Frances update on the networks. If this was Virginia I would just dismiss this as typical paranoia, since every time there's even a remote chance of snow people clean the shelves at Safeway and Giant. But the people here have been through this before so they have they know what to do and how to prepare. At first that made me feel a little bit better, but on second thought I'm not so sure. If people here understand how to prepare for a hurricane, then what I saw today means that this is going to be a monster. At Publix (our version of Giant) there were people with 2-3 shopping carts each, all full of food. At Target there wasn't a flashlight or a pack of batteries to be found. Luckily I managed to get some batteries, candels, water, and a flashlight. Although I think that I'm definately going to go and get some more stuff tomorrow. I'll have all day to do it since classes have been canceled. Normally I would be ecstatic about that, but your enthusiasm is dampered when a storm of this magnitude is heading your way. Luckily I live in a well-built and new building so I'm pretty sure that this place is built to withstand weather like this. We have a parking garage so the car is safe and they're giving us shutters tomorrow for the windows; Plus the windows are supposedly "Hurricane proof" (caugh, caugh, bullshit, bullshit). I think that a bunch of us are probably going to pick someone's place and ride out the storm there, so atleast this way we wont be bored out of our minds when the power and cable go out. I was scheduled to fly to New York this weekend since Monday is a holiday but there's almost no chance that my flight will be able to leave at 4pm on Friday. I'm still trying to find good airfare so that I can atleast get home to NOVA for the weekend but that's looking less and less likely. We were trying to find some cool place to drive to for the weekand, but every place from here northward could be affected so that doesn't make too much sense. The only cool thing that I can think of about sitting through this storm is going to the beach on Friday to see the storm roll in. It'll be cool seeing the waves pick up in size and the dark clouds start to roll in...
Well that's the story here in Miami. Hopefully Frances will turn north and I'll be able to catch my flight on Friday and head upstate. More soon...
