Well this past weekend was homecoming at MWC....I wanted to make it to Fred Vegas but I wasn't sure how much work I would have so I waited too long to book my airfare, and I wasn't going to spend $600 on a flight. After hearing the stories and seeing the pictures, I really wish that I could have been there though. I mean who doesn't want to see Joe throw kegs through windows and hack apart house walls with an axe. My previous post contained a link to a movie that Bryan made of all the homecoming pics, so hit it up and check out all the debauchery that went on this past weekend in Fred Vegas.
The last few weeks have been hectic and demanding, as far as school work goes, but I've managed to fit in plenty of good times and partying as well. Two weekends ago was my first South Beach clubbing experience. Beforehand, I really didn't know what to expect and wasn't sure if it was going to be my type of scene, but afterwards I couldn't wait to go back again. Nine of us went to Prive, which I guess is one of the higher-end clubs in South Beach. One of the girls that we were with knew a bouncer so we didn't have to wait in line with the mass of people that was nervously twitching with anticipation, hoping that they would be let in. The reality of South Beach hit me in the face like a stiff winter breeze. We could get a table and three bottles of liquor for $600. Yes, you read right, $600. The cheapest bottle of alcohol cost $180, even though could buy the same thing for about $30 at an ABC store. We thought that was a bit steep, so we just decided to pay the $20 cover and buy our own drinks. The inside of the club looked like most other clubs that I've been in, just a little more stylish. Dark, smoky, and filled with good looking people; Guido-looking guys overdressed, and girls underdressed in the skimpiest outfits that you can imagine. The club that we were in was circular, with an open-air courtyard in the middle that was a separate club called Opium. The one thing that the clubs down here all seem to have is beds; Beds randomly situated around the club for anyone to use. Pretty weird, but pretty cool at the same time. Anyway, we soon realized that we should have taken the $600 deal. The first drink that I ordered was a Red Bull and Vodka. As soon as the bartender reached for the Grey Goose, I knew that this night was going to put a major dent in my wallet. It was by far the most expensive cocktail I’ve ever had, setting me back about $15. Beers were $7. Ridiculous. I guess you pay for the atmosphere though. Ultimately it was well worth it, we were out until about 5am drinking and dancing, basically forgetting all about the stress of law school that awaited us come Monday morning. I haven't been back to South Beach yet, but I had an awesome time and can't wait to go back, hopefully this weekend.
The following weekend, my friend Joe and I drove down to Key West to chill with his brother, who was down there training with his naval air squadron. Joe drove down on Thursday night, but I had an early class on Friday so I couldn't leave until that afternoon. The drive down was scenic and tranquil. Aside from a few towns sporadically strewn across the keys, most of what you saw was palm trees and the bluest ocean water that you'll see in the U.S. The view from the Seven Mile Bridge was especially mind blowing; With a 360 degree panoramic view of wide-open ocean for as far as the eye could see. Key West itself is very small, only about 3 miles by 5 miles, mostly made up of beaches and resorts. Downtown Key West is situated along Duval Street, which is a scaled down version of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Duval is full of restaurants like Crabby Dicks and Buffet's Margarittaville, and bars like Ricks and Dirty Joes. We spent most of the day walking around and checking out the shops. That night we went out with Joe's brother and some Tomcat pilots that were down in Key West training for a few weeks. I think that some of the bartenders there are former military, so they give the visiting pilots drink deals whenever a squad is on base. This basically meant that we were able to drink a lot for very little, always a good thing. Key West really isn't in-season at the moment, so there weren't that many people our age out that night. Most of the bar crowd consisted of over-the-hill hippies trying to relive their Woodstock glory years. Nevertheless it was an awesome time. I would have liked to have stayed around for Saturday night also, but the law school scheduled our practice midterms for that Sunday, so we had to get back to Miami. When we were down there we did find out about Fantasy Fest (www.fantasyfest.net), which is Key West's version of Mardi Gras over Halloween weekend, and a group of us are planning on going down. College kids from all over Florida flock down there for the two week event so I'm really excited about that weekend. Now I just need to come up with a good costume, and we have to find a hotel room, which is proving to be difficult, or else we’re either sleeping in our cars or on the beach with the bums.
Well this is enough for now. Expect more regular updates from now on, so keep reading and keep the comments coming…….
